That’s the hardest thing for new people to overcome, to get them to not let that affect them. There are a lot of people that don’t like to get yelled at by zealous parents and coaches out there that feel like they have the right to demean any official that they want. We have a big gap from the 30s to mid 40s. But at 57 I’m one of the younger umpires. We have gone to the high schools, we have gone to the colleges, we have talked to the girls that have been playing high school and college ball and we have gotten them to help umpire. We’ve been successful recruiting new people. Q: It seems like the sport of softball is far from slowing down.Ī: Finding umpires for softball really has reached a critical stage. And I wanted to have something to do when I got older and couldn’t play ball, and still be part of the game. It gives you a whole different perspective of the game. I thought that would be a way to get me involved in both sides of the sport. I also travel the state recruiting umpires.Ī: I’ve always been an athletic person and when I moved to Salina (1987) I started playing slow pitch and realized they needed more umpires, just like we do today in 2017. I just got through with the 120-team tournament in Salina (Kansas ASA Fast Pitch Softball VIP Series), the largest Salina has ever had. Q: Besides being an umpire, what are your duties with the Amateur Softball Association?Ī: I assign umpires and run tournaments.
